About the job

Based at Mandarin Oriental Punta Negra, Mallorca, as the Assistant Director of Engineering, you will support and assist in overseeing all engineering-related activities, ensuring that the services provided are balanced to meet the needs of the physical property, our customers, and colleagues. You will play an active role in the daily operations of the department, supporting the Director in leading, mentoring, and educating the engineering team. Your responsibilities will also include assisting in the financial management of property operations and maintenance expenses, as well as utilities consumption.

During the pre-opening phase, you will be instrumental in supporting the Director of Engineering to drive the Technical Services divisional critical path, including assisting with recruitment for the Engineering team, process structuring, and ensuring compliance with MO standards. You will report directly to the Director of Engineering.

As Assistant Director of Engineering, you will be responsible for the following duties:

  • Assist in maintaining the proper and safe condition of all buildings, plant rooms, equipment, and front and back of house areas.
  • Support the implementation of safety procedures such as Fire, Life, Health, Safety, and Security, Emergency, and Standard Operating Procedures in compliance with Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group standards.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant statutory requirements, regulations, and codes for all work carried out at the hotel.
  • Assist in emergency response duties as required, and act as part of the Emergency Response Team.
  • Assist in overseeing the activities of the Engineering Management Team under the Director's supervision.
  • Assist in the identification and coordination of outsourced engineering companies and services.
  • Participate in formulating strategic business plans for the hotel in collaboration with the Director of Engineering.
  • Help implement the hotel's community involvement strategies and assist in the development of community programs.
  • Assist in developing and executing preventative maintenance programs according to Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group guidelines.
  • Support in managing the annual CapEx plan and budget for all engineering aspects of the hotel.
  • Help oversee general projects related to hotel enhancements, including assisting with project planning, administration, implementation, and evaluation.
  • Assist the Financial Controller in monitoring the hotel's financial performance, including the annual budget, energy consumption, and contractor selection.
  • Support the People & Culture Team in recruitment, employee development programs, labor cost management, community initiatives, and employee evaluation and recognition.
  • Assist the IT&T Director in telecommunications upgrades, annual maintenance of contingency systems, and testing of emergency power systems as per Mandarin Oriental guidelines.
  • Provide support to the Operations team with training and demonstrations on various systems like key systems, audiovisual equipment, lighting, and temperature control systems.
  • Attend Repairs and Maintenance, Project, and Risk Management Committee meetings as required.
  • Conduct regular inspections of all front and back of house areas to ensure quality and standards are maintained.
  • Ensure all technical documents, drawings, and manuals are updated in case of changes.
  • Maintain up-to-date certifications, test reports, inspections, and maintenance records in a well-organized manner.
  • Be fully familiar with all technical details of the hotel’s plant and services to provide support and ensure standards are upheld.
  • Assist engineering personnel with technical advice to ensure the maintenance of high standards.
  • Assist in preparing budgets, forecasts, and cost estimates related to engineering functions.
  • Actively contributes to energy conservation efforts and assist with energy control measures.
  • Maintain contact with local authorities and government departments (Fire Service, Electrical and Mechanical Service, Water Supply, etc.) to ensure compliance and to seek advice or assistance when necessary.
  • Promote and support MOHG’s Fire, Life, Health, Safety, and Security guidelines across all relevant areas.

As Assistant Director of Engineering, we expect from you: 

Experience and education

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering (preferably in areas such as Industrial Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Renewable Energy Engineering).
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in engineering or facilities management, preferably within luxury hospitality.
  • Experience in pre-opening projects and resorts is a plus.

Technical Skills

  • Good knowledge of major building systems, including HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and energy management systems.
  • Proficiency in office automation tools such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Visio, and other relevant software.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in both English and Spanish.
  • Strong organizational and multitasking skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities.
  • Attention to detail and the ability to maintain high standards of quality.
  • Problem-solving abilities and a proactive approach to addressing issues.
  • Ability to work well within a team and to support senior management in engineering operations.
  • Knowledge of health, safety, and environmental regulations within a hotel or similar setting.
  • Flexibility to support emergency operations and adapt to changing demands in a fast-paced environment.
