About the Role

The Director of Security is responsible for leading the overall safety, security, and risk management strategy for Mandarin Oriental, Rome, ensuring the protection of guests, colleagues, visitors, assets, and the reputation of the hotel.

Reporting to the General Manager, this position provides strategic leadership for all aspects of security operations, emergency preparedness, crisis management, loss prevention, and regulatory compliance. The Director of Security works closely with operational leaders across the hotel to cultivate a culture of safety and vigilance whilst delivering security services that reflect the exceptional standards and discreet luxury synonymous with Mandarin Oriental.

This role requires an experienced and highly visible leader who can balance proactive risk management with a guest-centric approach, ensuring a safe, secure, and welcoming environment for all.

Key Responsibilities

As Director of Security, you will be responsible for:

• Developing and implementing the hotel's overall security, safety, and risk management strategy in line with Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group standards.
• Leading and managing the Security team, ensuring the highest levels of professionalism, service excellence, and operational effectiveness.
• Establishing and maintaining comprehensive security policies, procedures, and operational standards across the hotel.
• Monitoring and evaluating potential risks, threats, and vulnerabilities, implementing preventative measures where required.
• Overseeing all aspects of physical security, access control, CCTV systems, investigations, and incident management.
• Ensuring compliance with all local laws, regulations, fire life safety requirements, and company policies.
• Leading emergency response planning and crisis management procedures, including evacuation protocols and business continuity planning.
• Conducting regular risk assessments, security audits, and inspections across all hotel facilities.
• Investigating incidents involving guests, colleagues, contractors, or visitors and preparing detailed reports and recommendations.
• Building strong relationships with local law enforcement agencies, emergency services, authorities, and external security partners.
• Partnering with the People & Culture team to support investigations, colleague safety initiatives, and workplace security matters.
• Delivering security awareness, safety training, and emergency preparedness programmes for colleagues across the hotel.
• Working closely with operational departments to ensure VIP visits, special events, and high-profile guest stays are managed safely and discreetly.
• Managing departmental budgets, resources, equipment, and vendor relationships to ensure operational efficiency.
• Driving a culture of safety, prevention, and continuous improvement throughout the hotel.

What We Are Looking For

As Director of Security, we expect from you:

• Significant leadership experience within hotel security, corporate security, law enforcement, military service, or a related security management environment.
• Previous experience leading security operations within a luxury hospitality environment would be highly advantageous.
• Strong knowledge of security management, risk assessment, crisis response, and loss prevention best practices.
• Proven experience developing emergency response, business continuity, and incident management plans.
• Excellent leadership and people management capabilities with the ability to develop high-performing teams.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the confidence to engage effectively at all levels of the organisation.
• Experience managing relationships with local authorities, emergency services, and regulatory bodies.
• Sound judgement, discretion, and the ability to remain calm under pressure.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a proactive approach to risk management.
• Excellent organisational and administrative abilities, including report writing and investigation management.
• Fluency in English and Italian is essential; additional languages would be advantageous.
• A commitment to service excellence and the ability to deliver security in a manner that enhances the guest experience.
