Based at the Corporate Office in Hong Kong, within the Technical Services – Architecture & Design function, the Director, Architecture & Design plays a strategic role in shaping Mandarin Oriental’s future portfolio. The position is responsible for ensuring that new developments and major projects embody the brand’s guest‑centric philosophy, design excellence, and luxury standards, while integrating innovation, technology, and sustainability.

The role reports to the Group Director of Architecture & Design and works closely with Development, Technical Services, Brand, and regional stakeholders across APAC & India.

As Director, Architecture & Design, you will be responsible for the following duties:

Development Support (Accelerate)

  • Support Development and Regional Technical Services teams with planning and design evaluations of new projects at pre‑HMA stage.

  • Recommend design improvements to align with Mandarin Oriental’s brand ambition and guest experience standards.

  • Contribute to the Vision & Positioning (PULSE) process through strong understanding of local markets and product positioning.

  • Deliver project‑specific Design Briefs aligned with the agreed Vision.

  • Drive the selection of Architects and Interior Designers capable of delivering the Vision.

  • Inspire and influence owners and partners to adopt Mandarin Oriental’s design vision and recommendations.

  • Maintain Mandarin Oriental’s global leadership in luxury hotel and resort design through innovation and sourcing best‑in‑class designers.

Project Support (Elevate)

  • Partner with Project Leaders to deliver exceptional design outcomes through active engagement and leadership in design discussions.

  • Review mock‑up room (MUR) designs and documentation.

  • Conduct space planning and layout reviews for guestrooms and all public areas including Restaurants & Bars, Spa, and MICE.

  • Lead the briefing and design review process for Speciality Suites.

  • Support Regional Technical Services teams on major CAPEX projects and Strategic Asset Management initiatives.

  • Track progress and provide clear updates to leadership and key stakeholders.

Brand Innovation

  • Demonstrate design leadership and initiative across projects and internal initiatives.

  • Collaborate with internal teams to define and support ad‑hoc research and consumer insight needs.

  • Drive the development of Mandarin Oriental’s Processes, Tools, Product Standards & Guidelines (PS&G).

  • Propose, research, trial, and implement design and product innovations that enhance the guest experience.

  • Actively contribute to brand innovation, sustainability principles, and global Technical Services initiatives.

  • Support the Group Director of Architecture & Design on global priorities and projects as required.

As Director, Architecture & Design, we expect from you:

  • University degree (or equivalent) in Architecture and/or Interior Design.

  • 15+ years’ experience in luxury hotel development, interior design, and construction, across urban and resort environments.

  • Proven senior leadership experience within luxury hospitality or comparable high‑end environments.

  • Expert knowledge of luxury hotel and branded residence interior design.

  • Strong spatial planning, sketching, and design review capabilities.

  • Sound understanding of industry standards, codes, and sustainability frameworks (e.g. LEED).

  • Strong design and construction management experience with the ability to manage multiple projects concurrently.

  • Strategic thinker with strong analytical and problem‑solving skills and attention to detail.

  • Proficiency in MS Office, AutoCAD, Revu‑Bluebeam, and relevant design tools.

  • Culturally sensitive, collaborative, and confident in influencing owners and senior stakeholders.

  • Fluent in English; Mandarin Chinese is an advantage. Additional languages are welcome.

  • Willingness to travel within the region as required.
